What is Opana 40 mg?
Opana 40 mg (oxymorphone) is an opioid pain medication. An opioid is sometimes called a narcotic.
Opana 40 mg is used to treat moderate to severe pain.
The extended-release tablet form of this medication is for daily treatment of severe pain. Opana ER is not for use after pain relief as needed.
Opana 40 mg may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Important Information
You should not use Opana if you have severe asthma or breathing problems, a blockage in your stomach or intestines, or moderate to severe liver disease.
Opana can slow or stop your breathing, especially when you first start taking this medication or when your dose is changed. Never take this medication in larger amounts or for longer than prescribed. Do not crush, break, or open an extended-release pill (Opana ER). Shut it all off to avoid exposure to a potentially fatal dose.
Oxymorphone can be addictive, even at regular doses. Take this medication exactly as your doctor prescribed. Never share your medication with anyone else. DRUG ABUSE This medication can cause addiction, overdose, or death, especially in a child or someone else who uses the drug without a prescription.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant. Oxymorphone can cause life-threatening withdrawal symptoms in a newborn baby whose mother took this medication during pregnancy.
Do not drink alcohol. Dangerous side effects or death can occur.
Before using Opana 40 mg
You should not take Opana 40 mg if you are allergic to oxymorphone, or if you have:
severe asthma or breathing problems
a blockage in your stomach or intestines
or
moderate to severe liver disease.
Some medications can interact with oxymorphone and cause a serious condition called serotonin syndrome. Make sure your doctor knows if you are also taking medicine for depression, mental illness, Parkinson’s disease, migraine headaches, serious infections, or to prevent nausea and vomiting. Ask your doctor before making any changes to how or when you take your medicine.
Tell your doctor if you have:
any type of breathing or lung disease;
a history of head injury, brain tumor, or seizure
a history of drug abuse, alcohol dependence, or mental illness
difficulty urinating;
liver or kidney problems
gallbladder, pancreas, or thyroid problems; or
if you are taking a sedative such as Valium (diazepam, alprazolam, lorazepam, Ativan, Klonopin, Restoril, Tranxene, Versed, Xanax, and others).
Opana may be addictive. Never share this medicine with others, especially someone who has a history of drug addiction or is addicted. Keep this medicine in a place where others cannot get to it. Selling or giving away Opana to another person is against the law.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. If you use oxymorphone while you are pregnant, your baby may become dependent on the medicine. This can cause life-threatening withdrawal symptoms in the baby after birth. Babies born with addictive drugs may need medical treatment for several weeks.
It is not known whether oxymorphone passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
How should I use Opana 40 mg?
Take Opana 40 mg exactly as prescribed. Follow all instructions on your prescription label. Opana can slow or stop your breathing, especially when you first start taking this medication or when your dose is changed. Never take Opana in large amounts or for longer than prescribed. Tell your doctor if the medicine also seems to stop working to relieve your pain.
Opana can be addictive, even at regular doses. Take this medicine exactly as your doctor has prescribed. DRUG ABUSE This medicine can cause addiction, overdose, or death, especially in a child or other person using the medicine without a prescription. Selling or giving away Opana to another person is against the law.
Always check your bottle to make sure you have received the correct pill (same brand and type) of medicine that your doctor prescribed. Ask the pharmacy staff if you have any questions about the medicine you receive at the pharmacy.
Stop taking all other narcotic pain medicines around the clock when you start taking Opana.
Take Opana on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.
Do not crush, break, or open an extended-release pill. Shut it all off to avoid exposure to a potentially fatal dose.
Some forms of Opana 40 mg are made with ingredients that are not absorbed by the body. Some of the tablet may appear in your stool. This is a normal side effect and will not make the medication less effective.
Do not stop using Opana suddenly after long-term use, or you may have unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Q
